You are likely to have heard the phrase that says: It's not what you know, but who you know. Some even say that there is only six (6) degrees of separation exists between you and any other person in this county. This separation rule, whether fact or or just a Mr. Kevin Bacon phenomenon, hits much closer to home when it comes to taking prescription medicine.
Answer this question: Do you or anyone you know have trouble taking their medicine as prescribed? The question is asked because medical professionals have shown that only one (1) degree of separation exists between you and a person who has trouble with their medications. You see, it really makes no matter whether the person is young, old, or even if another loved one is around to help out. In fact, approximately half (50%) of the 2.8 billion prescriptions taken annually in the United States are taken improperly. The frequent result directly affects your healthcare costs and insurance rates.
This huge problem occurs in every medical discipline, from cancer to diabetes to matters of the heart and head, without any form of discrimination. It is not just an age issue for those who had trouble remembering or got confused by the instructions. Challenges often occur because we were too busy with work or the kids, lost the bottle, had a headache, were tired after a long day, felt groggy from another medication, spilled a container, did not have our glasses, thought it easier to take all medication at one time, or simply decided to catch up on a missed dosage. The next thing you know, someone was rushed off to an emergency room or has died.
Proceeds from the Spin Sports Festival are being used to fund clinical trials for a system recognized by the National Institutes of Health to help people take their medications properly.
